Negotiating with Trump's trade team: insights from former Australian diplomat Jane Hardy

This interview was first published in ABC Listen.

Jane was interviewed about her experiences negotiating with the US by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Nick Bryant, as President Trump began to mount a trade tariff assault on most of the world.

Donald Trump’s senior trade adviser said Australia is “killing” America’s aluminium market, in a possible set-back to Canberra’s efforts for an exemption from a proposed 25 pre cent tariffs on steel and aluminium.

How might the Australian government influence the key decision makers to achieve a longer-term exemption from tariffs?

  • Guest: Jane Hardy, former Australian senior career diplomat and Australian Government official. Over three decades, Jane served in seven Australian embassies in the Indo-Pacific region, the United States and Europe, four at ambassador level.
